Millions of women in South Africa are subjected to physical, sexual, economic, psychological and emotional abuse every day.
Lwazi is an initiative of the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services to help victims of gender-based violence access help and empower them with the skills they need to escape the cycle of abuse. The initiative aims to promote socio-economic development and bridge the gender gap through the ICT sector.

Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize is the Deputy Minister of the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services.

Her lifelong dedication to social justice and women and children’s rights can be seen in such achievements as founding the Children and Violence Trust and her role as treasurer general of the  ANC Women’s League (ANCWL). Lwazi is an initiative originating from Prof Mkhize’s belief in using technology to bridge the gender gap and her passion for improving the lives of women through ICTs.

Intel Corporation

Intel Corporation is a world leader in computing innovation, designing and building the essential technologies that are the foundation for the world’s computing devices. Known as a leader in policy, diversity, inclusion, education and sustainability, Intel will be providing their Learn Easy Steps programme, which covers modules on basic ICT skills aimed at improving digital literacy.

Siyafunda Community Technology Centre

The objective of Siyafunda CTC is to offer people access to computers, the internet and other digital technologies which enable them to gather information, create, learn and communicate with others while they develop essential digital skills. Intel’s training will take place at Siyafunda CTC centres, which have played a significant role in driving innovation and revitalising communities.


iTMaster, established in 2001, has been instrumental in delivering quality services to government, state owned entities and the private sector. iTMaster has partnered with Oracle to supply, install and train two schools with a computer laboratory equipped with wifi to assist learners and teachers to bridge the digital divide.

The Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services

The DTPS aims to develop ICT policies and legislations that create favourable conditions for accelerated and shared sustainable growth for the South African economy that positively impacts on the well-being of all citizens. The website and training is part of a goal to develop and use ICT for socio-economic development.


ZADNA is a NPO, accountable to the DTPS. Their mandate includes administration and management of the .za namespace, licensing and regulating registries and registrars, and publishing guidelines on domains and the .za domain namespace. ZADNA will be coordinating, administering and managing the domain for the website.
